Supporting children and families

Raising children is challenging enough, but when you add the stresses of poverty, homelessness, family violence, mental illness, social isolation and drug and alcohol issues, families can fall apart.

Sadly it is the children who suffer most.

Barnardos endeavor to break the cycle of abuse and neglect by strengthening families who are struggling with lifes significant challenges.

Meet Sanita, who's building a new life

It was violence every day. Um, I went through a lot and I have a little one, three-year-old daughter at that time. So that’s why I decided to run away from home.

When he used to hit me and all this, I can’t tell anyone because of my culture, you know they… What they do is they judge me. They think I’m the bad one. So he is nothing, like you know, he doesn’t do, men never do mistake. Always women does mistake. Yes, it was hell. I would say that, it was hell at that time. Now it’s heaven and it’s because of Barnardos.

I went through… like they support me for everything. Everything, I mean like financially, I got somewhere to live, I’m not scared anymore. The main thing was having someone there to tell me like, “You can do it, Sanita.”

When I came into Barnardos I can’t even speak English properly. Many things. You know, they can’t even understand me and I didn’t feel like I was alone, even though I don’t have any family here at that time. I feel like this is my home, you know, and my family lives here. This is a letter my daughter write for Barnardos: ‘To the people who supported me.’ So, we’re grateful and it says ‘Thank you’. She says, ‘Thank you to all the people at Barnardos who looked after me and thank you to those people in the childcare center who looked after me.’

So, if you have a crisis, don’t let the kids suffer.
