How to adopt a child in Australia
Provide a brighter future for a child in need through open adoption.
Open adoption provides a child with stability for life
Contrary to popular belief, overseas adoption is not the only way to adopt a child in Australia. There are thousands of kids in foster care who are in need of a loving, secure family to call their own, and Barnardos is working to make this happen in NSW.
If you’re looking to start or expand your family, consider giving children in need a sense of belonging, identity and security.

The adoption process
Adoption is the most permanent type of care for a child so there is a robust and considered process involved; we are here to guide you through every step. Above all else our mission is to find the right family every child.
1. Connect with Barnardos
You can enquire online, or give us a call on 1800 663 441. We will walk you through the next steps.
3. Explore adoption decision
Your Case Manager will work with you extensively to confirm that this is the right decision for you and your family. You’ll need to fill out paperwork (all securely done online) and complete the relevant safety checks.
5. Assessment interviews
You’ll get to meet members of our friendly Adoption team who will help to determine if you’re the right fit for adoption. They’ll consider your physical and mental health, and whether you have stable housing and finances, for example. These interviews are generally in-home and with your Case Manager present.
7. Placement of child
We take special care to make sure that children are placed in the right home for their needs, for example culture and background. Your Case Manager will work with you to make sure the right fit is found.
9. Application for adoption
It can take some time following the placement of a child in a household to reach a point where it is appropriate to submit an application for adoption to the NSW Supreme Court. This could be within 2 years from the placement of the child however individual circumstances can change this timeline.
2. Information session
A one-on-one in-home session with a Barnardos Case Manager means you get to ask any questions you may have around the process. They will run you through the ‘ins-and-outs’ of foster care and adoption and share all the knowledge and tools you will need throughout the process.
4. Carer training
You’ll receive comprehensive foster care training, as well as access to ongoing learning opportunities.
6. Approval for foster care
Our Carer Approval Panel will then let you know when you are approved as a foster carer. Timelines vary but this could be around 1 year from when you first enquire.
8. Foster care with your child
Your Case Manager will work with you to support your relationship with the child, helping you create a sense of stability, security and belonging through open communication and contact visits with biological family.
10. Adoption granted
Where an adoption order is granted by a judge, the child becomes a legal member of your family and you will have full parental responsibility. You will need to maintain an open relationship between the child and their biological family. Read more about how open adoption helps a child’s wellbeing.

Who can adopt?
At Barnardos Australia, we welcome individuals and families from diverse backgrounds who have a genuine passion for making a positive difference in the lives of children. If you’re considering opening your heart and home to a child in need, here are some of the requirements for becoming a foster carer in NSW:
- Age and residency: You must be at least 25 years old and a permanent resident or citizen of Australia to become a foster carer (with exceptions made for Kinship carers). There is no upper age limit at Barnardos.
- Relationship status: You can be single, married, or in a defacto relationship (heterosexual or same sex relationship).
- Culture and religion: We welcome carers from all cultural and religious backgrounds.
- Safe and stable environment: Foster carers need to provide a safe and stable living environment for children. This includes having appropriate sleeping arrangements, a clean and comfortable home, and access to basic amenities.
- Health and wellbeing: Your physical and mental health plays a crucial role in providing effective care. As part of the assessment process, you’ll need to undergo a medical examination and provide relevant health and immunisation records.
- Smoking status: In accordance with health advice Barnardos seeks to mitigate the impact of second-hand smoke on children in care and therefore does not allow foster carers to be smokers (some exceptions made for Kinship carers).
- Capacity for parenting: Foster carers should have a child-focused approach and be flexible to meet the needs of children and young people. You should have a willingness to approach a child’s culture with humility, respect and curiosity and an ability to build strong relationships and connections with a child or young person, their family, and the agency and other professionals.
- Criminal history check: As part of the application process, you’ll be required to undergo a thorough criminal history check to ensure the safety of children in care.
- Working with Children Check: All foster carers must hold a valid Working with Children Check clearance, which helps ensure the safety and well-being of the children placed in your care.
- Training and support: Foster carers are expected to participate in training and development programs to enhance their skills and knowledge in caring for children who have experienced trauma or challenging circumstances. Barnardos provides comprehensive training opportunities and ongoing support to help you navigate the foster care journey.
If you meet these criteria and have a genuine desire to make a positive impact in the lives of children, we encourage you to consider becoming a foster carer with Barnardos. Together, we can provide a safe and nurturing environment for children in need, empowering them to reach their full potential.
Take the first step today and apply to become a foster carer with Barnardos Australia. Your support can change a child’s life forever.

Adoption in Australia FAQs
What is open adoption?
In cases where the court has determined that it’s not safe for children to go back home, open adoption provides security and belonging for life. Through a formal court process, the adopted child becomes a legal member of the adoptive family, whilst still maintaining contact with their biological family. This helps them form a healthy sense of identity which is essential for their development. Read more about why open adoption is best for children here.
