Barnardos 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10th December, Human Rights Day.

Barnardos will be supporting the 16 Days initiative and we invite our supporters to get involved.

Workplaces have a role to play in supporting people experiencing domestic and family violence, particularly for those that are experiencing financial or technological abuse from the perpetrator, with the intention of limiting access to support, resources or services. For those who are experiencing coercive control and have their communication limited or devices monitored, the workplace can be one of the few places that individuals can safely access information and support, without the perpetrator’s knowledge, avoiding the risk of repercussions.

Get in touch to discuss how you or your organisation can participate and increase awareness of Domestic Violence and it’s impact on children and families – partnerships@barnardos.org.au or make a donation to Barnardos Domestic and Family Violence support programs and services here.

Have you planned your end-of-year celebration?

The Barnardos Amazing Race is an alternative to the traditional end-of-year get together and a unique way to gather your friends or colleagues to have fun, all whilst supporting vulnerable children and families.

The Barnardos Amazing Race will take place on the 27th November in Sydney.

All proceeds raised from the event will support Barnardos programs and services, which provide assistance to children and families impacted by the devastating effects of domestic violence, such as isolation, financial instability, mental health issues and homelessness.

This year we invite you to participate in the Barnardos Amazing Race, as a way to support families escaping DFV, empower survivors, normalise the conversation and give children a voice.

There was no one asking questions or supporting our family. My mother was isolated and alone and would ‘tell’ her story matter of fact, and others would listen without intervention. No one asked ‘what about the kids.

These women believed me. I was told I was crazy for 12 months and they believed me. I wouldn’t be where I am now without it, I think it hindsight I probably would have gone back to him, it would have been easier to go back to him. But I’ve done the hard thing, I haven’t gone back. We get to be safe, and we get to stay safe, and that cycle ends with him.

Barnardos Gifts for Kids 2024 Appeal

To all our amazing champions for children, thank you so much for your ongoing support of the Barnardos Gifts for Kids Appeal. In 2023, your donations made it possible for both our centre and program managers to provide Christmas presents and gift cards for thousands of children and young people in our care, some of whom have experienced Domestic and Family Violence (DFV), abuse, neglect, poverty and homelessness.

With your help we were able to deliver over $200,000 worth of gifts to children, young people and families in our programs – families just like Kirra’s, who shares her empowering story of strength with you below.

A new start for Kirra and her family

Kirra and her two young children found themselves homeless for several months during 2023, having had to relocate as a result of domestic violence. Despite their circumstances, Kirra started from scratch and managed to secure a private rental, along with necessities like white goods and bed linen, to rebuild the loving home that she knew they all deserved. However, with Christmas fast approaching, Kirra had no funds to give her kids the experience that they needed after such a challenging year.

Your compassion meant that families like Kirra and her children didn’t miss out on Christmas, giving them the extra support they needed – not only to select suitable gifts for their children, but to access food purchased with donations received through the Gifts for Kids appeal.

“I really appreciate the assistance; the kids learnt a lot of life lessons last year. Seeing the joy on their faces when they opened the gifts, that they thought they might not receive, made such a huge difference. I had never been in a situation like what we went through last year and just felt empty and lost, as to what to do. It brought tears to my eyes on Christmas Day, when my daughter said, ‘Santa didn’t forget us mum, he found us!’. That right there was thanks to Barnardos supporters, I appreciate all you’ve done for us from the bottom of our hearts. This year we will be doing our best to give back and help other families – the kids have already written down a few ideas, which I love. Thanks again from all of us. ’’

At Barnardos Australia we recognise the diversity of the children, families and communities we support. Inclusivity is vital to the work we carry out and we try to celebrate different cultures and traditions that are important to our children and families. From Christmas and children’s birthdays to Lunar New Year, NAIDOC Week, Diwali and Ramadan, we make sure that all cultures are represented, and celebrations acknowledged.

You can help share the love this Christmas!

Help us provide gifts to vulnerable children this year by purchasing a gift card, selecting a gift from the Barnardos Simply Giving page or making a cash donation that will assist and empower children and families that require support or specialist services throughout the holidays.

Or why not get your colleagues involved and create your own Barnardos toy drive for your through the Simply Giving website! Set-up is simple and can include your organisations logo, customised message and gift donation goal. You will be sent a unique toy drive link and QR code to share with your employees and customers. You will have access to a dashboard, allowing you to track progress and communicate your success and impact with your supporters. Easy ideas on how to launch your campaign and maximise your impact through social media tiles, emails and other assets can be found here.

Born to an Australian mother and Egyptian father in Kuwait, Yasmine’s food memories tell the unconventional tales of her nomadic life and how becoming an acclaimed interior designer wasn’t by design.

Yasmine and her husband Tom “the jaw man” chose @barnardos_au as their social cause.

What Yasmine said about Barnardos:

“Barnardos is a charity that really champions Australian youth who often suffer from violence, abuse, homelessness and poverty through their support programs. It’s all about connecting or giving families life skills and resilience to help them rebuild their lives. It also offers, for the families that become unsafe, it offers adoption and foster care for kids as well.

The Yurungai Learning Centre is something that Tom and I have become a corporate partner for BA its an afterschool care program that really tries to bridge the gap between youth today and how you went through cultural activities and education to always make the kids come out on top. So that’s really what it aims to do and its really focused on Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander children as well. So it presents afternoon care and its usually the place where kids get their last hot meal of the day. A lot of the kids there are in housing where maybe 20 families, family members live at, many times its overcrowding. We’ve been fortunate enough to take the team to build Coolamons. Its about connecting indigenous children to their country and making sure they remember so we have done such a shit job at making them forget.”

“The team at Prime Video had a great experience participating in the Barnardos Amazing Race. It was the perfect opportunity to bond as a team outside the office environment, and the activities themselves were varied and played to different strengths… from problem solving to the more creative.”

Special Christmas Party and AMF

The Australian Mutuals Foundation is proud to be one of Barnardos Australia’s top corporate partners.

Volunteers from the Australian Mutuals Foundation had the exciting opportunity to accompany children from Barnardos Australia to the 2023 Sydney Special Children’s Christmas Party held at Rosehill Gardens on 6 December 2023.

The Australian Mutuals Foundation proudly supported the day with a total of 9 volunteers from Australian Mutual Bank, Unity Bank, First Choice Credit Union and G&C Mutual, providing assistance to a group of children supported by Barnardos Australia to enjoy a day of Christmas cheer.

At the event, the children were treated to a special day of live music, yummy food, fun rides, interactive games, face painting and many more activities. There was a special appearance from Santa and each child went home with a show bag and toy.

The Special Children’s Christmas Party aims to give marginalised children the chance to enjoy the magic of Christmas in a safe and welcoming environment. It provides a unique experience for children with special needs or those from disadvantaged circumstances who may otherwise miss out at Christmas time.

While the focus of the event is to provide a fun day out for the children and their families, it was also a heartwarming and rewarding experience for the volunteers who made a real difference and helped put smiles on the children’s faces.

Auburn Christmas Fair

The team at our Auburn Centre welcomed over one hundred children and parents to the Auburn Christmas Fair last week. Activities included children’s entertainment, games, dancing, a candy floss machine, and a special visit from Santa himself!

We’d like to extend a special thanks to Genevie Pham from Genesa, who led a group of volunteers and donors from Advanced Lending and Co, Global RE and An Viet Group. The group provided and wrapped Christmas gifts for all the children at the event, as well as those who were unable to attend. They also delivered and served delicious halal Vietnamese food and barbecued sausages for the children, parents, and staff.

Genevie and her associates connected with several of our Program Managers at the event and learnt about the support services that Barnardos Centres provide to local communities, which reinforced their pledge of support in the new year. We look forward to growing our partnership with the group and are excited about what we can achieve through this collaboration next year!

HSBC Christmas Party

Each year HSBC organises a wonderful Christmas party for the children from our Barnardos Yurungai Learning Centre – and this year was no different! When the children arrived at the Barangaroo Head Office, they were given the VIP treatment and escorted to a wonderfully decorated festive room. There they were served a delicious Christmas meal, cooked by the onsite chef, and received wonderful, personalised gifts.

HSBC have been partnering with Barnardos for over 20 years. Employees regularly volunteer their afternoons to attend one of our Centre’s Homework clubs, where they assist children with their schoolwork and literary and numeracy skills. This year HSBC also introduced a quarterly Homework Club at their Head Office, which not only supported children in their studies, but also provided them with the opportunity to experience the workplace and speak to staff about their roles, careers and education pathways. One of the children has regularly voiced his determination to become the CEO of HSBC – watch out Antony! 😉

Sandra Powell and Catherine Ellershaw have been volunteering at the Centre for many years and have developed strong bonds with the children and Program Managers. As such, they were able to identify personal gifts for the children at Christmas. We’d like to offer a special thanks to Sandra and Catherine for their commitment to the Yurungai Learning Centre and for making Christmas extra special this year!
