Support for domestic family violence awareness & advocacy

Join us to help protect children

Following the launch of the Barnardos Domestic Family Violence Research Report and the documented increase of family violence across Australia, we invite organisations to join us in the Barnardos national advocacy and awareness campaign. The initiative launched on the 25th November 2024, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to coincide with the with the UN’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

Why should you get involved?

The economy

Family violence has a significant impact on the economy.

Violence against women and their children costs Australia an estimated $1.9 billion per year.

Your workforce

The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that between 55% and 70% of women who have experienced violence are currently in the workforce.

Workplace impact

Domestic and family violence can have a negative impact on:

  • Employee wellbeing
  • Workplace health and safety
  • Workforce productivity
  • Levels of workplace stress
  • Use of personal/sick leave
  • Staff turnover

Work Health & Safety

Family and domestic violence can become a WHS issue if the perpetrator makes threats, intimidates or carries out violence on a partner or family member at the workplace, including if working from home.

Provide support

The workplace is increasingly recognised as somewhere that individuals experiencing domestic & family violence seek advice, support, resources, or referral services.

Employers have a legal responsibility to protect their employees from family and domestic violence in the workplace.

They must create an environment that is safe and promotes equality and make paid leave available to employees that are experiencing family and domestic violence.

Increasing awareness of the detrimental effects of Domestic and Family Violence on families and children helps to normalise the conversation amongst staff, customers and communities. Corporate Social Responsibility of this nature contributes to workplace culture and increased trust.
